Pizza Dough Ingredients
Believe it or not, not much goes into making pizza dough. All you need is flour, water, yeast, and salt. We are not lying there; that’s all you need to make pizza dough.
However, if you want to make something similar to our Flavored Crust® pizzas, that’s a whole different ballgame.
To get the perfect dough, you need high-quality ingredients. You don’t have to get your flour straight from Italy, although that would be pretty awesome. But you do have to make sure you are using the right ingredients. Filtered water, self-rising yeast, and highly refined flour. Some people use oil, some people don’t, that’s up to you.
Pizza Dough Technique
So, if all you need is four ingredients for the perfect pizza dough, it means it's all about the technique, right? Well, probably. Having an out-of-this-world kneading technique will definitely help you make the perfect dough for pizza.
You have to know that your dough has to rest, a lot. The first time it rests for 5-8 hours. Second rest, you leave it covered overnight in the fridge. Third rest, you take it out and let it warm up to room temperature for 20 minutes. That’s a lot of waiting for the pizza to rest.
Then comes the actual kneading and shaping of the pizza dough. Here, the key is to do it with your hands.
Start by shaping the dough ball into a pizza pie, working from the center out to the borders. Then, bring the pizza dough up and start stretching it from the center out, until you get a perfectly round pizza base. You are probably going to have to do this a couple of times. Coating the table and your hands with flour will help with the sticky pizza dough, although you don’t want to add too much as the dough will absorb this flour and change the recipe.
Pizza Dough Baking
Finally, once your pizza dough is shaped and ready to go, it is time for the baking. Do this step wrong, and all your hard work will go to waste. True story.
Hopefully, you have a pizza oven at home. Don't you? Well, turn your AC on and open your windows because it is going to get seriously hot at your house. Ideally, you want your pizza baking at 850 F, but there’s no way your home oven reaches that temperature.
But don’t despair; you can still do this. Set up your oven to the max, usually 550 or 600 degrees. Make sure your oven reaches this temperature before you place your pizza inside. Use a pizza stone, which helps retain the heat, and start cooking your pizza right away.
