Even when it is bad, pizza's pretty awesome. And even when you hear about some of the strange things that have been put on pizzas, such as the seaweed and eel pizzas that are all the rage in Japan, you think: I might go for that. There are many pies that sound even crazier. Check through the list below. One of these weirdly delicious and unusual pizzas might just be your new favorite. Or not.
1. The Berlusconi
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi openly mocked the food in Finland when he visited there in 2005. However, the Fins had the last laugh when they won the America's Plate International Pizza competition in 2008 with, you guessed it, smoked reindeer pizza. The rest of this pizza's ingredients include tomato, cheese, chanterelle mushrooms, and red onion. And they named it the Berlusconi.
2. Canada's Seenay Pizza
A popular pizza joint in suburban Vancouver whipped up this little number: tiger prawns, lobster ratatouille, smoked steelhead, Russion Osetra caviar, and as the menu says, tops everything off with "snowed with white truffles." A bargain at $850.00.
3. Australia's Coat of Arms
In Australia you can get just what you expect you'd be served the minute you got off the plane in Sidney: the Australian Coat of Arms. That's right, kangaroo and emu on a pizza with bush tomato, capsicum, and cranberries (I'll admit, I'm not 100% behind the cranberries).
4. Breakfast Pizza
So, this one's not really so weird, but it does hit all the delicious buttons. A breakfast pizza loaded with eggs, bacon, fried onions, cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, and salsa verde. Favorite meal paired with favorite food. Done.
5. California-Style New York Pizza
So it looks like no one told these guys that New York-style pizza means thin crust, because the Bronx Pastrami Pie includes pastrami, pickles, and mustard as well as a complimentary look down the nose at Mets fans.
6. Haggis Pizza
Billed as the best of Scotland and Italy—Scottish haggis paired with delicious mozzarella and tomato sauce probably lives up to its description. It's on this list mainly for weird, not necessarily delicious, but who knows. If you show up on "Ode to Haggis" day, for lack of a better name, you may be treated to a pizza that depicts Robert Burns on a pizza with this meatloaf-ish food made of sheep's liver, heart, and lungs.
7. Gangnam-Style Pizza
A Korean chain with a few outposts in LA has concocted the Potato Gold pizza. The sweet potato mousse crust topped with mushrooms, corn, beef, potato wedges, nacho chip flakes, bacon, sour cream, and the kitchen sink (just kidding about the kitchen sink) sounds as delicious as it sounds weird. It demonstrates that Gangnam style doesn't have to be mind-numbingly annoying.
8. The Heartstopper
A pizza place in Milwaukee has a plethora of fascinating pies, including chili Frito pie, BBQ ribs, mac and cheese and sweet potato and kale. But the most unusual of all just might be the Gyro, where they top a pizza with gyro meat, onion, tomato, and tzatziki sauce, in effect combining two of the greasiest foods available and making them into a delicious heartstopper.
