4 Famous Howies
There are the Bens, the Jennifers, and the Beyonce, but what about the famous Howies? There are quite a few famous Howards, including Howard Hughes, the American entrepreneur, and Howard Stern, who hosted a radio talk show for decades. But those are Howards, not Howies.
Howie is a Scottish locational surname that means “hollow.” As far as first names go, Howie is simply a nickname for those named Howard. For many, though, the nickname stuck and became part of their celebrity persona. Here are a few famous Howies that prove it isn’t just a surname anymore.
Howie Mandel
For Gen-Xers, Howie is best known for being the voice of Animal and Skeeter in “Muppet Babies,” and Bobby in “Bobby’s World.” Millennials may better know him as the host of “Deal or No Deal.” Years before he was a cartoon and TV host, he was a stand-up comic. Though his real name is Howard, he has always been a Howie. Mandel is currently a judge on “America’s Got Talent.” Fun fact: he was the voice of Gizmo in the 80s hit “Gremlins.”
Howie Long
Former National Football League (NFL) defensive end, actor, and sports analyst, Long has an impressive sports resume. He won a Super Bowl ring in 1984, played in the Pro Bowl eight times, and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1985. After his football career with the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders, Long went on to star in numerous commercials and TV cameos, eventually landing a full-time gig as a television football analyst.
Howie Dorough
Those of you who were team Backstreet in the late 90s and early 2000s will easily remember this Howie. For those unfamiliar with him, Dorough is a member of the Backstreet Boys, a group that sold millions of albums during the boyband craze of the late 1990s and early 2000s, and broke teen hearts everywhere. Dorough is still an active member of the group, and also has a company that specializes in real estate development.
Hungry Howie
Hungry Howie is the blond-haired, dough-eyed mascot of Hungry Howie’s. Since the 1970s, Howie has been helping consumers feed their pizza needs.
Not much is known about his personal life, but his continual success in the pizza industry has made him well-known.
