15 Movies You Should Never Watch When You’re Hungry

It has been proven that watching food shows literally can make us hungrier and even gain weight. And nothing makes a stomach grow fonder than watching somebody else indulging in your favorite food. This is why there are certain movies you should never watch when hungry.

From decadent, silky chocolates to delicious truffle topped creations, these movies are not for the faint of heart and are definitely meant to watch on a full stomach.

1. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

The first one on our list is definitely an obvious choice. But who can resist a chocolate waterfall, a silky chocolate river, edible grass, and dancing Oompa-Loompas? Make sure you’ve had your fair amount of sweets before you tune into this dessert fan classic if you do not want to find yourself breaking into the nearest candy store. 

2. Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

First came the book, then the movie made us a believer in Elizabeth Gilbert’s mantra: eat, pray, love. After two hours of pasta, gelato, and pizza eating in Italy, spicy creations in India, and the freshest dishes in Bali, you will find yourself scrounging around for anything edible.

3. No Reservations (2007)

Nothing like a movie where both leading roles are chefs to get you hungry. In No Reservations, Catherine Zeta-Jones takes us on a journey through an epic love-cook battle, with delicate high-end creations for the perfect at-home breakfast with endless pancakes and special sauces. This movie will definitely make you flock to the nearest restaurant to quell starvation.

4. Ratatouille (2007)

The ultimate movie for chef wannabes. If a rat can have such a sophisticated palate and become the head of a renowned French restaurant, so can you, right? Ratatouille will not only leave you hungry, but it will also propel you straight to your kitchen until you perfect your signature dish: mac n’ cheese a la carte.

5. Chef (2014)

Chef will take you on a food journey, from upscale restaurant creations like pasta with homemade pesto to tasty Cuban sandwiches in a food truck. Follow the story of Chef Carl, played by Jon Favreau, as he gets back to his roots on board his food truck. Make sure you watch this one on a full stomach, or you might end up breaking into your neighbor’s kitchen.

6. Julie & Julia (2009)

This movie proves that your love for butter can take you anywhere. Follow Julie Powell, played by Amy Adams, as she conquers the world of French cuisine with plenty of butter, delicious recipes, and one goal: to prepare all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s famous book Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Fair warning, you may want to stay away from the kitchen since most people believe they are master chefs after watching this film – yet, we know they are not!

7. Haute Cuisine (2012)

Have you ever wondered how presidents eat? Follow this true story on how a talented chef from a small town in France suddenly became the president’s chef. Hortense Laborie (Catherine Frot) will take you through her tasty journey filled with truffle and butter and her indisputably amazing cooking skills.

8. Chocolat (2000)

Calling all chocolate lovers. Let your senses and your desires devour a course with this movie. Meet a mysterious chocolatier with a unique talent, confectioning the most decadent chocolates to satisfy her customer's desires. Make sure you lock your pantry, or you will be at risk of indulging in too much chocolate.

9. Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)

There is something so serene and calming about this documentary. Follow a world-renowned sushi master entirely devoted to this ancient craft. The mouthwatering scenes of his sushi creations handmade to perfection will have you speed-dialing the nearest sushi restaurant.

10. Waitress (2007)

Some say baking is almost therapeutic, and in this movie, that is even truer. However, for whoever is watching, it can be absolute torture. With endless pie-making scenes and delicious tastings after, we can see why this movie can make someone hungry. Warning: you may feel an urge to join a pie-eating contest after watching this film.

If you think you are a talented unrecognized chef, this movie is for you. However, make sure you have a satisfying meal before watching this film. Join a self-taught culinary novice in his quest to impress a French restaurant owner. Between Indian and French cuisine this movie is definitely a treat for the eyes.
